The Department of Gastroenterology at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was established in 1999, with five functional areas including the Gastroenterology Outpatient Department, Gastroenterology Ward, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Gastrointestinal Dynamics Testing Room, and Helicobacter pylori Testing Room. It is a clinical department that integrates medicine, education, and research. It is a key discipline at the hospital level, the chairman unit of the Digestive Disease Special Committee of the Shenzhen Medical Association, the national inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis and treatment regional center, and the Guangdong Inflammatory Bowel Disease Alliance unit. It is also the chairman unit of the Shenzhen Inflammatory Bowel Disease Special Disease Alliance and the leader unit of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Group of the Digestive Disease Special Committee of the Shenzhen Medical Association.
There are 50 medical staff in the gastroenterology department, including 22 doctors, 9 chief physicians, 8 deputy chief physicians, 8 doctors with doctoral degrees, and 10 master's degrees, all of whom come from key medical colleges in China. Many undergraduate physicians have gone to Japan Cancer Research Hospital, Cleveland Hospital in the United States, and well-known hospitals in China for research and development.
The department has 46 gastroenterology wards and 9 endoscopy rooms. A sub specialty direction has been formed based on the diagnosis and treatment of common digestive system diseases and difficult and critical illnesses, with "minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment under digestive endoscopy", "inflammatory bowel disease", "hepatobiliary pancreatic intervention", "gastrointestinal motility disorders", "neuroendocrine tumors" and other characteristics. The annual outpatient volume and number of discharged patients rank among the top in Shenzhen, and it has been rated as an "excellent department" of the hospital for many consecutive years.
The Digestive Endoscopy Center is fully staffed and equipped with excellent software and hardware facilities, making it a leading endoscopy center in Shenzhen that can radiate to surrounding cities. The Digestive Endoscopy Center has high-end endoscopic treatment/surgical equipment including electronic gastroscopy, electronic colonoscopy, staining endoscopy (NBI), magnifying endoscopy, ultrasound endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, magnetic control gastroscopy, small intestine endoscopy, etc.
The characteristic technologies are as follows:
(1) Routine gastrointestinal endoscopy: painless gastrointestinal endoscopy, NBI staining endoscopy, magnifying endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, magnetic control capsule endoscopy, etc;
(2) Endoscopic diagnosis and treatment techniques for gastrointestinal polyps and early tumors: argon ion high-frequency electrocoagulation (APC), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic mucosal dissection (ESD);
(3) Minimally invasive treatment for submucosal tumors: endoscopic submucosal tumor resection (ESE), tunneling submucosal tumor resection (STER);
(4) Hemostasis of gastrointestinal bleeding: including esophageal variceal ligation, injection of esophageal variceal sclerosant, injection of gastric variceal tissue gel, hemostasis of peptic ulcer arterial bleeding, hemorrhoid ligation, etc;
(5) Esophageal foreign body removal surgery;
(6) Treatment of benign and malignant esophageal stenosis: balloon dilation, stent implantation, and transoral endoscopic myomectomy (POEM);
(7) Fine needle aspiration biopsy guided by endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS-FNA/FNB). The number of endoscopic treatments completed each year ranks first in Shenzhen.
The department holds a leading position in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease in Shenzhen. It is a national level "Inflammatory Bowel Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Regional Center" and a "Guangdong Inflammatory Bowel Disease Alliance Unit". It is also the chairman unit of the "Shenzhen Inflammatory Bowel Disease Alliance" and the leader unit of the "Inflammatory Bowel Disease Group" of the Digestive Disease Special Committee of the Shenzhen Medical Association. The department has established a strong multidisciplinary team (MDT) with gastroenterology as the core, including gastroenterology, pathology, medical imaging, nutrition, pharmacy, etc., and has established a complete IBD diagnosis and treatment process and follow-up mechanism. The annual IBD outpatient volume exceeds 3000 people and the hospitalization volume is nearly 900 people, making it the leader of many IBD diseases inside and outside Shenzhen. The department took the lead in introducing pressure measurement systems related to gastrointestinal motility in Shenzhen and established the first gastrointestinal motility laboratory in Shenzhen. It was one of the earliest in the city to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal motility disorders and functional gastrointestinal diseases. In the past two years, the latest high-resolution solid-state pressure measurement 3D system from Medtronic in the United States has been introduced, which can perform high-resolution esophageal and anorectal pressure measurements, 24-hour esophageal impedance and pH monitoring, gastroscopy, biofeedback, etc., providing accurate diagnosis and treatment for patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders.
The department is the first specialized department in Shenzhen to carry out the diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumors, offering specialized disease clinics and leading multidisciplinary cooperation in comprehensive treatment. The construction of the department adheres to the guidance of solving clinical problems, closely follows the forefront of domestic and foreign research, and has formed research directions with characteristics and professional advantages such as "research on artificial intelligence assisted diagnosis and treatment technology for digestive system diseases", "research on diagnosis and treatment technology for digestive endoscopic diseases", "research on gut microbiota", and "research on brain gut interaction abnormalities".
Gastroenterology aims to provide high-quality medical services and takes it as its responsibility to cultivate educational talents. It is a master's training center of Peking University, Shantou University, Shenzhen University and other universities. For many years, it has been responsible for teaching and management of clinical eight year, five-year, resident physician, and continuing physician programs. We attach great importance to the combination of teaching and educating students, and have achieved fruitful results in our teaching work. We have multiple provincial and municipal teacher backbones and have been repeatedly rated as an "excellent teaching department".
